HackerTube AI: a guide to Hacker News videos

Find your next programming tutorial, AI lecture, or science documentary in a collection shaped by Hacker News discussions. HackerTube AI brings the public HackerTube archive into a searchable video directory, with topic filters, community context, and a place to save the videos you want to revisit.

What is HackerTube?

HackerTube is Andrej Karpathy’s weekend project: an alternative way to discover YouTube videos through links shared in Hacker News comments. The public snapshot used here contains 6,454 videos across 150 topics and 16 broad areas, drawing on discussions from 2007 to 2026. HackerTube AI is an independent interface to that archive, with links back to the original project and its sources.

Explore programming, AI, and ideas beyond tech

Browse software engineering, machine learning, mathematics, computing history, and systems security, then follow your interests into design, business, the arts, or space. A programming search might lead to a conference talk about language design; a mathematics topic might introduce a visual explanation you can use alongside a course. The categories are starting points for exploration, rather than a prescribed learning path.

Search by a video title, creator, or subject, using queries such as neural networks, Python, or Bret Victor. Most source material is in English, so English keywords often work best. Choose an area, narrow it to a topic, and filter for talks, tutorials, courses, or documentaries. Compare the community ranking, positive recommender count, and latest discussion year to find a useful place to start.

Understand why a video appeared on Hacker News

Open a video to read its summary and the context attached to it in the archive. Where a discussion link is available, you can return to Hacker News to read the original conversation. Mentions can include recommendations, references, jokes, or criticism, so a mention count is not the same as a positive recommendation. AI-assisted summaries are useful orientation, but checking the original discussion helps you form your own view.

Watch YouTube videos and save your next discovery

Select a video to open the embedded YouTube player. You can also follow the YouTube link if an uploader disables embedding or a video cannot play in your region. Bookmark useful finds in My collection without creating an account. The collection stores video IDs in this browser, so it is a convenient watch-later list on this device rather than a cross-device library.

Turn a useful video into a deeper learning session

Start with a question you want to understand, read the description, and choose one video that fits your current level. Pause to take notes, try the example, or compare another explanation from the same topic. A video directory can help you find a starting point; the real value comes from testing the ideas and connecting them to your own work. Return to the collection when you are ready to explore the next question.

Questions about HackerTube AI

Is HackerTube AI the original HackerTube?

No. HackerTube AI is an independent discovery site built around the public archive. Karpathy’s original project is at hackertube.org. This site is not affiliated with him, Hacker News, or YouTube.

Does the archive update automatically?

The current library uses the public export dated October 31, 2026. It is a snapshot, rather than a live feed of every new Hacker News comment. Video availability can change even when a record remains in the archive.

Is HackerTube AI a YouTube alternative?

It offers an alternative starting point for finding YouTube videos through Hacker News discussions. Playback stays on YouTube; this edition does not provide video editing, downloads, or AI video generation. Videos belong to their original creators.
